Google One Hits Milestone: Surpasses 100 Million Subscribers Following Gemini Advanced Plan Announcement
Integration Ahead: Sundar Pichai Announces Gemini Access Across Gmail, Docs, and More via Google One
Google One, Google’s comprehensive subscription service offering additional cloud storage across Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, and more, has recently surpassed 100 million subscribers. This significant achievement comes on the heels of the tech giant’s unveiling of Gemini Advanced, an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant powered by its robust foundational model, Gemini Ultra.
Bundled with Google One, the Gemini Advanced subscription plan has played a pivotal role in driving the accelerated growth of Google One’s subscriber base. Notably, Google announced that Gemini Advanced will extend its AI capabilities to various other services within its ecosystem.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce the milestone, stating, “We just crossed 100M Google One subscribers! Looking forward to building on that momentum with our new AI Premium Plan (launched yesterday) offering AI features like Gemini Advanced.” Furthermore, Pichai disclosed that Gmail, Docs, and other services included in the Google One subscription will soon integrate AI-based features.
This milestone holds significant importance for the tech giant, particularly considering its decision to discontinue the free unlimited storage offer for Google Photos in 2021, subsequently encouraging users to opt for paid subscriptions. While this move faced initial resistance, especially from users exceeding the 15GB free limit, surpassing 100 million subscribers within less than four years underscores the compelling value proposition of Google One.
The impact of the achievement becomes clearer when compared to the company’s YouTube paid subscriptions. Google also recently hit 100 million subscribers on the platform, comprising both YouTube Premium subscribers and YouTube Music subscribers. The milestone came nine years after a paid tier was first announced for YouTube (YouTube Red was launched in October 2015).
In India, Google One monthly subscriptions start at the price of Rs. 130 for 100GB of combined storage space. This also includes some AI-based photo editing features, but none are powered by Gemini. The premium plan with 2TB of storage space is priced at Rs. 650 a month, whereas the Gemini Advanced subscription plan, named Google One AI Premium, is set at Rs. 1,950 per month.
