Google Maps is globally launching speedometer and speed limit features on iPhone and CarPlay
Google Maps has finally introduced speedometer and speed limit features on iOS and CarPlay, a move that comes over five years after these features initially debuted on Android. The new additions aim to assist iPhone users in adhering to speed limits and avoiding speeding tickets while navigating.
According to exclusive information obtained by TechCrunch, Google has begun rolling out these features globally for iPhone users. Initially spotted in India early last week, Google confirmed on Tuesday that the rollout will extend worldwide.
To activate the speedometer and speed limits on Google Maps for iOS, users can navigate to their profile picture within the app, then proceed to Settings > Navigation > Driving options. Once enabled, the speedometer will display the vehicle’s current speed in miles or kilometers per hour, depending on the region. The speed limits feature integrates with the speed indicator, changing colors to alert drivers when they exceed the designated speed limit for their area.
It’s important to note, as Google emphasizes on its support page, that the speedometer is intended for informational purposes only. Drivers should continue to rely on their vehicle’s built-in speedometer for precise readings of their actual driving speed.
Google initially launched these features on Android in 2019, expanding them to over 40 countries later that year after an initial limited release. The addition of these features to iOS and CarPlay underscores Google’s commitment to enhancing driver safety and compliance with traffic regulations across its platforms.
