According to reports, Apple is actively developing prototypes of a clamshell-style foldable iPhone as well as a folding iPad

According to a report, Apple’s foldable iPhone is not included in the company’s mass production plans for 2024 or 2025.

Apple’s first mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, was recently launched in the US. Now, rumors are swirling about Apple’s long-awaited foldable iPhone. Reports suggest that the Cupertino-based tech giant is currently working on “at least two” prototypes of foldable iPhones that fold horizontally, potentially rivaling devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 5. However, it remains uncertain whether these foldable iPhones will enter mass production within the next few years.

According to sources cited by The Information, Apple is currently developing prototypes of at least two clamshell-style foldable iPhone models. These devices would feature a similar display form factor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip lineup, allowing the screens to fold horizontally. While these foldable iPhones are still in the early stages of development, they are reportedly not included in Apple’s mass production plans for 2024 or 2025.

One challenge that Apple’s engineers are facing is designing a foldable iPhone with displays visible on the outside when the device is folded shut. However, they have encountered difficulties as this design could make the device more susceptible to damage. Additionally, engineers aim to create a foldable iPhone that maintains the thin profile of current iPhone models. However, factors such as battery size and display components may contribute to the device’s thickness.

Apple is said to have approached at least one supplier in Asia for components related to these two foldable iPhone models, which are expected to come in different sizes.

Indeed, reports suggest that Apple is also exploring the development of a foldable iPad. This device is rumored to feature a similar size to the current generation iPad Mini, sporting an 8-inch display. Apple’s engineers are reportedly working to address challenges such as narrowing the crease that appears at the center of the display and developing a hinge mechanism that allows the display to lie flat when unfolded.

While Apple has not officially announced any plans for a foldable iPhone or iPad, it’s clear that they are actively exploring the possibilities in this space. With Samsung dominating the foldable smartphone market and other manufacturers like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo also entering the foldable segment, there’s certainly potential for Apple to introduce innovative foldable devices that could compete with existing offerings like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, Oppo Find N3 Flip, and Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G.
